What GOT ME SPOT in 2 weeks:
1. Called at 9AM Tuesday, not Monday:
Monday director busy with weekend chaos. Tuesday 9AM she is calm and has coffee. I called and said: “Hi, I know list is 8 months, I can start any day part-time, I bring own diapers, my son is 2.5 potty training. Can I tour tomorrow?” She said yes for tour!
2. Offered part-time first:
Full-time spots full. But Tuesday/Thursday spot open! I took 2 days for $680/month, then after 3 weeks they offered full-time when kid left. Part-time is secret door!
3. Went in person with toddler:
I brought my toddler to tour. He said “hi” and hugged her leg. Director smiled. She told me later “We pick families we like, not just list order.” Show you are nice family.
4. Called 3 small home daycares:
Big centers have 50 on list. Small home daycare licensed (6 kids) had spot next week! I found on Facebook Marketplace “daycare [my zip code]” and Care.com filtered “licensed”. One had spot because family moved.
5. Asked: “Can I pay deposit today?”
When she said “maybe spot in 2 weeks”, I said “I can Venmo $200 deposit right now to hold.” She said yes. Money talks. Most moms say “let me think” – director picks fast mom.
My exact script that worked:
“Hi, I know you are full. I love your program at $1,200/month. I can start part-time any day, I bring own wipes from Costco, and I can pay deposit today. Can we do 10-min tour tomorrow 10AM? My cell is…”
Timeline:
- Day 1: Called 5 places 9AM Tuesday
- Day 2: Toured 2 places
- Day 3: Paid $200 deposit to home daycare
- Day 13: Got call from big center “spot open Friday”
- Day 14: Started!
Cost trick:
Home daycare was $950 vs center $1,450. Saved $500! And ratio smaller – 1 teacher 6 kids vs 1 to 12.
If you on waiting list now, do this today: Call Tuesday 9AM, ask part-time, go in person with toddler.
