How to Prepare Toddler for Daycare: 5 Things I Wish I Did Before Day 1

How to prepare toddler for daycare was my full time worry the week before we started. I watched YouTube, I bought labels, I cried in Target. First day was still rough. But second week was easier because of these 5 things.

1. Practice the Morning Routine 3 Days Before

Do not start new routine on Day 1. Start 3 days before.

Wake up same time, same breakfast, same backpack, same shoes, drive by daycare, wave, come home. Toddler brain needs preview, not surprise. When we did this, Day 1 felt like Day 4 to him.

2. Pack Together, Not Alone

I packed at night alone to be efficient. Mistake.

When I let him pack his own backpack, he felt ownership. Let him put 1 shirt, 1 diaper, 1 toy inside. He carried it to the door himself. That backpack became his safety item, not mine.

For ideas of what teachers actually want in that backpack, check my packing list post.

3. Make a Goodbye Book

Take 4 photos. Photo 1 you waving at daycare, photo 2 him playing, photo 3 you coming back, photo 4 hugging at home. Print small, staple.

Read it 2 times a day before daycare starts. My son asked for this book every morning for a week. It made abstract idea of you always come back concrete.

4. Label Feelings, Not Just Clothes

We label clothes, bottles, shoes. We forget to label feelings.

Say out loud: You might feel sad when Mama leaves. That is okay. Sad is normal. I feel sad too. Then you will play and I will come back after snack.

When you say it first, they do not need to scream it.

5. Plan Your Own Day 1 After Drop Off

How to prepare toddler for daycare also means how to prepare you.

I had nothing planned after drop off and sat in parking lot crying and checking camera. Next time I booked coffee with a friend right after. Have a plan for YOU from 9 to 11. It helps you not text teacher every 10 minutes.

Bottom Line

If you are googling how to prepare toddler for daycare at 11pm the night before, you are already a good mom. It will be hard for 3 days. Then it will be boring and normal.

Pack together tonight, practice morning tomorrow.
