Clock said 2:00 AM like picture. My toddler screaming in crib again. 3rd night in row. I cried holding him – “Why you wake?”
I tracked 10 nights and found 3 triggers – fixing them gave us 7AM again.
Why 2AM wake happens (my 3 triggers):
1. Too much day sleep = Not tired at 2AM:
He napped 2.5 hours at daycare 12:30-3PM. Then bed 7:30PM. By 2AM he had slept 6.5 hours = not tired enough! Like we wake at 3AM if we nap all afternoon.
Fix: I asked daycare cap nap to 1.5 hours max. They set alarm 2PM wake. First 2 days he was grumpy 5PM, day 3 he slept 7:30PM to 5:30AM straight!
2. Room 75F + wet diaper = wake screaming:
Our room was 75F, he sweated, diaper leaked. He woke cold and wet. I checked – diaper heavy at 2AM.
Fix: Room 68-70F, fan on low, and size up diaper to nighttime diaper ($8 more at Target but worth). Also no water after 6:30PM – sippy cup earlier.
3. My reaction was teaching him to wake:
Old me: Ran in, picked up, rocked 20 min, gave milk. He learned “If I scream at 2AM, mom gives milk and cuddle!”
New me (hard!):
- Wait 2 min outside door (most times he babbles and goes back!)
- If still crying, go in, keep lights off, pat back, say “Night night, 2AM is sleep time, love you” – NO picking, NO milk, NO talking much
- Leave after 1 min. Repeat if cries. Night 1: 3 times. Night 2: 1 time. Night 3: 0!
What didn’t work:
- Early bedtime 6:30PM = worse 1AM wake!
- Late bedtime 9PM = overtired screaming!
- Melatonin gummies – pediatrician said no for toddler!
My exact night schedule now that gives 7AM:
- 12:30-2PM: Nap only 1.5hr (daycare caps)
- 6:30PM: No more water
- 7:00PM: Bath, books, no screens
- 7:30PM: Bed, room 70F, white noise
- 2AM: If wake, 2-min wait + quick pat
- 6:30-7AM: Wake!
Result: 7 nights last week, only 1 wake at 3AM for 2 min!
If your toddler wakes 2AM screaming, try nap cap + room temp + boring reaction tonight. Tell me tomorrow what happened!
