Hidden Daycare Fees That Cost Me $350: What Your Contract Hides

I thought I had daycare all figured out.

When we toured our center here in Ohio, they quoted me $320 a week. I did math in parking lot, texted husband, thought – okay tight but we can do it. I signed 12-page contract on phone while toddler trying to eat crayon. I did NOT read fine print.

Then February hit. I got invoice for extra $350 on top of tuition. I actually called them thinking it was mistake.

It wasn’t. It was all in contract. I just never saw it coming.

It was perfect storm. February had snow day (we still had to pay, which I kinda knew), but then there was:

  • Annual registration fee: $150 – charged every February, not just first year
  • Late pickup fee: My husband stuck in traffic on I-70, 12 minutes late. That was $45. They charge $1 per minute after 6:00 PM, and contract said 6:00 PM sharp, not 6:05.
  • Sick day/materials fee: $75 “curriculum fee” for spring crafts and cleaning supplies
  • My lunch fail: I forgot to pack lunch one Friday. They provided one for $15, plus $10 “no lunch” fee.
  • Credit card processing: $8 fee because I paid with card not ACH – didn’t know ACH was free!
  • Extra diapers: $42 – they charge $7 per diaper if they provide!

Total: $150 + $45 + $75 + $25 + $8 + $42 = $345! Almost $350 extra one month!

8 Hidden Fees to Check in YOUR Contract BEFORE signing:

  1. Late pickup – $1-5 per minute after 6PM! Ask if 5 min grace?
  2. Registration yearly – $100-250 every year, not just first!
  3. Curriculum / supply fee – $50-150 twice a year!
  4. No lunch / snack fee – $10-25 if forget!
  5. Diaper / wipe fee – $5-10 per diaper if they provide!
  6. Late payment – $25-50 if pay after 5th!
  7. Credit card fee – 3% extra! Use bank ACH!
  8. Vacation – Do you still pay 50-100% when you go on vacation? Ours yes, still pay 50%!

How I Saved $200 Next Month:

  • Set phone alarm 5:30PM pickup (not 6PM)
  • ACH bank pay saved $8
  • Packed 5 lunches Sunday in fridge $30 at Target
  • Asked about vacation credit – got 1 week 50% off after asking!

Ask these 5 questions at tour:

  • “What fees beyond weekly tuition?” Get list printed!
  • “Late pickup grace?”
  • “Vacation / sick pay policy?”
  • “Yearly registration?”
  • “ACH free?”
