Daycare Tax Deduction: How I Got $1,200 Back Filing 2025 Taxes in 2026

I paid $18,400 for daycare in 2025. I thought that money was just gone.

Then in April 2026, when I filed taxes, my tax software popped up: “Child and Dependent Care Credit: $1,200”. I thought it was a glitch.

It wasn’t. I had no idea you could write off daycare.

If you’re paying daycare and NOT doing these 3 things for your 2026 taxes, you’re leaving $1,000-$6,000 on the table like I almost did.

What I Actually Got Back Filing in April 2026 for 2025:

  • Federal Credit: $1,200 back (Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit)
  • State Credit Ohio: $300 extra (Ohio has 25% of federal)
  • FSA Savings: $1,100 saved because I ran $5,000 through Dependent Care FSA pre-tax

Total saved: $2,600 on $18,400 bill. That’s 14% back!

3 Ways to Get Money Back – Do ALL 3 for Your 2026 Taxes:

1. Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (Everyone gets this)

This is NOT a deduction, it’s a CREDIT = dollar for dollar off your taxes.

  • If you have 1 kid: You can claim up to $3,000 of daycare expenses, get 20-35% back
  • If you have 2+ kids: Up to $6,000 expenses, same %
  • My income $75K joint, I got 20% of $6,000 = $1,200

Requirements:

  • Both parents must work or be in school
  • Daycare must have Tax ID (ask director for W-10 form)
  • Child under 13
  • File Form 2441

Get your Tax ID NOW in August 2026, don’t wait till April 2027 like I did!

2. Dependent Care FSA – The $5,000 Pre-Tax Trick for 2026

My HR never explained this. You can put up to $5,000 pre-tax into FSA for daycare.

  • $5,000 pre-tax at 22% tax bracket = $1,100 saved
  • Enroll in November 2026 for 2026 year – if you missed, you can still enroll for remaining 2026!
  • Use it or lose it by Dec 31, 2026
  • You can do BOTH FSA + Credit!

How I do it now: I put $5,000 in FSA, then claim remaining $1,000 for credit.

3. State Credit – 28 States Give Extra!

Ohio gives 25% of federal credit. So $1,200 federal = $300 Ohio extra.

Check your state: Google “[Your state] child care tax credit 2026”

What You Need to Collect RIGHT NOW in August 2026:

  1. Daycare Tax ID / EIN – Email director now
  2. Year-to-date paid for 2026 – Keep receipts
  3. FSA enrollment – Mark November 2026 calendar

Email to Director:

Hi [Director Name],
Could you please send me W-10 form with your Tax ID for 2026 taxes? Need for Form 2441. Thank you!

What NOT to Do:

  • Don’t claim cash payments with no Tax ID – IRS flags
  • Don’t forget Form 2441
  • Don’t skip FSA – no income limit

For 2026 I’m on track to save $3,100 because I did FSA full $5,000 + credit.

Your $320/week is $16,640/year. At 20% credit = $600-$1,200 back + FSA $1,100 = $1,700-$2,300 back!
