Daycare sick policy is the reason I paid $1,200 for days my daughter didn’t even go to daycare. No one explains daycare sick policy when you sign contract. I thought sick days meant free days. I was wrong.
In 2025, my daughter missed 18 days for fever, hand-foot-mouth, and ear infection. I paid $1,280 full tuition for empty chair. Plus center closed 2 days for flu outbreak – no credit until I fought.
Here is what daycare sick policy really means and how I got $340 back.
Daycare Sick Policy Fever Rule – 24 Hours Means 2 Days:

My center daycare sick policy: “Child must be fever-free 24 hours without medication.” I thought 24 hours = next day return. Nope.
If fever Monday 3PM, 24 hours fever-free means Tuesday 3PM no fever, return Wednesday morning. So 1 fever = 2 days out = $128 lost for me.
Daycare sick policy ask: “Is 24 hours from fever start or fever end? Does medicine reset clock?” Some centers: if you give Tylenol Tuesday 7AM, clock restarts, return Thursday!
Daycare sick policy for other illnesses:
- Hand-foot-mouth: Daycare sick policy 5-7 days out, even if fever gone, must be blister-free
- Vomiting/diarrhea: Daycare sick policy 24 hours after last episode

- Every sick day, get doctor note even for fever – urgent care $0 copay for me. Note says “Emma seen 2/10, fever 101, may return 2/12 fever-free.” This note is proof for credit.
- If out 3+ days, email director: “Per daycare sick policy, Emma out 3 consecutive days with doctor note, requesting 50% credit for day 3 per other centers policy, can you make exception?” I did 2 times, got 50% credit 1 time = $64 back.
- If center closes for outbreak, email: “Per Ohio admin code 5101:2-12-15, requesting credit for closure days.” Got $128 back.
- Track sick days in app: I use Daycare Sick Tracker note – date, reason, doctor note yes/no, credit asked. In 2025: 18 sick days, 2 closure days, asked credit 4 times, got $340 total.
