Daycare Sick Policy: I Paid $1,200 For Sick Days No One Explains

Daycare sick policy is the reason I paid $1,200 for days my daughter didn’t even go to daycare. No one explains daycare sick policy when you sign contract. I thought sick days meant free days. I was wrong.

In 2025, my daughter missed 18 days for fever, hand-foot-mouth, and ear infection. I paid $1,280 full tuition for empty chair. Plus center closed 2 days for flu outbreak – no credit until I fought.

Here is what daycare sick policy really means and how I got $340 back.

Daycare Sick Policy Fever Rule – 24 Hours Means 2 Days:

Daycare sick policy for fever:
My center daycare sick policy: “Child must be fever-free 24 hours without medication.” I thought 24 hours = next day return. Nope.

If fever Monday 3PM, 24 hours fever-free means Tuesday 3PM no fever, return Wednesday morning. So 1 fever = 2 days out = $128 lost for me.

Daycare sick policy ask: “Is 24 hours from fever start or fever end? Does medicine reset clock?” Some centers: if you give Tylenol Tuesday 7AM, clock restarts, return Thursday!

Daycare sick policy for other illnesses:

  • Hand-foot-mouth: Daycare sick policy 5-7 days out, even if fever gone, must be blister-free
  • Vomiting/diarrhea: Daycare sick policy 24 hours after last episode
  • Pink eye: Daycare sick policy 24 hours after antibiotics start + doctor note
  • Lice: Daycare sick policy must be nit-free, not just lice-free

I didn’t know daycare sick policy for hand-foot-mouth was 7 days! I argued, they showed handbook page 12. Read page 12!

Daycare Sick Policy Do You Get Credit?

Most daycare sick policy: NO credit for sick days. You pay full tuition to hold spot. I paid $1,280 for 18 sick days.

But some daycare sick policy DOES give credit:

  • Center A: 5 free sick days/year, then full pay
  • Center B: 50% credit with doctor note for 3+ consecutive days out
  • Center C: 0 free days, no credit ever (mine)

Ask before sign: “What is daycare sick policy for credit? How many free sick days? Do you need doctor note? What if child out 5 days straight?”

My new contract negotiation: I asked “Can we add 3 free sick days for $320/week?” They said no, but gave me 2 half-price days with doctor note – saved $160.

Daycare Sick Policy Closure Credit:

Daycare sick policy for center closure is different from child sick.

My center closed 2 days for flu outbreak – all teachers sick. Daycare sick policy handbook: “No credit for outbreak closure.” I paid $128 for closure.

But Ohio law: If daycare closes for non-weather reason, must credit or make-up day. I quoted law, got $128 credit.

Daycare sick policy closure questions:

  • If you close for sickness outbreak, is there credit?
  • If you close for weather, credit?
  • How many closure days before credit kicks in?

Get daycare sick policy closure in writing. My friend’s center gives credit after 1st closure day, mine after 3rd – big difference.

Daycare Sick Policy Doctor Note Trick to Save Money:

My daycare sick policy trick to get $340 back:

  1. Every sick day, get doctor note even for fever – urgent care $0 copay for me. Note says “Emma seen 2/10, fever 101, may return 2/12 fever-free.” This note is proof for credit.
  2. If out 3+ days, email director: “Per daycare sick policy, Emma out 3 consecutive days with doctor note, requesting 50% credit for day 3 per other centers policy, can you make exception?” I did 2 times, got 50% credit 1 time = $64 back.
  3. If center closes for outbreak, email: “Per Ohio admin code 5101:2-12-15, requesting credit for closure days.” Got $128 back.
  4. Track sick days in app: I use Daycare Sick Tracker note – date, reason, doctor note yes/no, credit asked. In 2025: 18 sick days, 2 closure days, asked credit 4 times, got $340 total.

Expert Insight on Daycare Sick Policy:

I asked Ms. Johnson, Director 15 years managing daycare sick policy, “What do parents not understand about daycare sick policy?”

She said: “Parents think daycare sick policy is to punish them. It’s to protect other 15 kids and staff. If one sick kid comes, 8 get sick next week, then we close. We lose $5,000 if we close. So daycare sick policy is strict. But good parents ask daycare sick policy before enrollment: ‘What is exact fever threshold? 100.0 or 100.4? Is it ear or forehead temp? What thermometer do you use?’ We use forehead, parents use ear – difference 0.5 degrees. And always have backup plan for daycare sick policy days – we send 6 kids home per week average in winter.”

She also said bring doctor note even if not required – builds trust for credit exception.

Since learning daycare sick policy, I budget $100/month sick fund, have backup plan, and get doctor note every time. Paid $1,200 in 2025, will pay $600 in 2026 with new tricks.
