My toddler not eating at daycare was my biggest worry. Every afternoon the lunchbox came back almost full. Same food he eats at home. At home he eats everything. At daycare nothing. I thought something was wrong.
I asked his teachers what they do. Turns out it is not about the food. It is about pressure and noise.
1. No Pressure Lunch
At home I said eat your chicken, one more bite. At daycare they say nothing. They put the box down and walk away.
When toddler not eating at daycare, pressure makes it worse. Teachers never say eat. They say you can eat if you want. That one change got him to eat half his lunch on day 2.
2. Same Spot Every Day
At home he eats on couch, in high chair, at table. At daycare it is same table, same chair, same friends every day.
Ask teacher where he sits. Keep it consistent. Kids eat more when they feel safe and know what comes next.
3. Tiny Portions Not Big Lunchbox
I packed a full adult portion. Teachers told me it scares toddlers. They put 1 tablespoon of each thing only.
Try 3 blueberries, 2 crackers, 2 chicken pieces. Tiny looks doable. You can always pack extra in another container for seconds. My toddler not eating at daycare started eating when it looked small.
4. Let Friends Eat First
Toddler not eating at daycare is often just watching. He watches other kids eat for 5 minutes before he starts.
Ask teacher to seat him next to the best eater, not your friend. Let him watch. Do not make him first to eat. Peer pressure works.
5. Same Lunch 3 Days In A Row
I changed lunch every day trying to find what he likes. Teachers said stop. Same lunch 3 days straight.
Day 1 he will not touch. Day 2 he will touch. Day 3 he will eat. Novelty is not exciting, it is stressful. Repetition builds trust.
Bottom Line
If your toddler not eating at daycare, it is normal for first 2 to 4 weeks. It is not picky eating, it is new environment eating.
Try no pressure and tiny portions this week. My lunchbox came back empty on day 4.
