I Lost Half My Hair at 4 Months Postpartum – My Photos & What Finally Stopped It

I thought I was going bald at 4 months postpartum.

I was in the shower, washing my hair, and a clump came out. Not a few strands — a clump. I stared at it in my hand and cried. No one told me this would happen.

If you are finding hair everywhere — on your pillow, in your baby’s hands, clogging the drain — you are not alone. I tracked my hair loss for 21 days and here is my honest story.

When Did My Postpartum Hair Loss Start?

Month 3: A little extra shedding when brushing.
Month 4: The worst. I lost about 200 hairs a day. My part line got wider, I could see my scalp.
Month 5: It slowly started to slow down.
Month 6: Baby hairs started poking up everywhere.

Doctors say this is normal due to hormones dropping after birth, but no one warns you how scary it feels.

What I Tried That Did NOT Work

  • Expensive anti-hair loss shampoo for $32 — made no difference
  • Cutting my hair short — made thin spots look more obvious
  • Washing every day — made it worse

What Finally Helped Me (My 4 Fixes)

1. I stopped brushing when wet
I now brush only when dry, with a wide-tooth wooden comb. Wet hair breaks 3x more.

2. I got my iron checked
This was the game changer. My ferritin was 18, very low. Doctor gave me iron + I started biotin. After 2 weeks, shedding cut from 180 hairs to 80.

3. Silk pillowcase
Less friction at night, less hair on pillow in morning.

4. I wash only every 2-3 days
Less pulling, less stress on roots.

My 21-Day Hair Loss Log (Real Numbers)

I collected hair from my brush and shower drain each day:

Week 1 average: 180 hairs/day
Week 2 average: 130 hairs/day (started iron)
Week 3 average: 80 hairs/day

It DOES stop. I promise you.

Now at 8 months postpartum, I have all these little 1-inch baby hairs sticking straight up. They look crazy but I am so happy to see them.

If you are in month 4 right now, please ask your doctor to check your iron and thyroid. And know you are not going bald forever.
