We Quit Daycare for 6 Months – Here’s Exactly How Much We Saved (And Lost)

Everyone said “you’ll save so much quitting daycare!” We did it for 6 months. Here is real USA math:

How much we SAVED:
Daycare cost: $1,800/month x 6 = $10,800 saved!
Gas to daycare: $120/month x 6 = $720 saved!
Total saved: $11,520

Sounds amazing right? Wait…

How much we LOST / SPENT:

  1. My freelance income: I quit my part-time job, lost $1,200/month x 6 = -$7,200
  2. Groceries up $300/month (toddler home eats all day) = -$1,800
  3. Activities to not go crazy: $150/month = -$900
  4. Coffee + sanity snacks: $100/month = -$600

Total lost: $10,500

Real savings: $11,520 – $10,500 = $1,020 for 6 months = $170/month

What I learned as USA mom:

Quitting daycare does NOT save $1,800/month like TikTok says! You lose income and spend more at home!

When quitting DOES make sense:

  • If daycare is $2,500+ in your state (NY, CA)
  • If you can work from home with toddler (I couldn’t)
  • If family helps free

When it does NOT:

  • If you will lose job (like me)
  • If you have no village
  • If your mental health needs break (I needed!)

We went BACK to daycare after 6 months. $170/month saving not worth my burnout.

Now we use part-time daycare 3 days/week: $1,100/month. Best middle!
