My 2-year-old had full meltdown at Target last week. On floor, screaming, people staring. Old me would panic. New me fixed it in 2 minutes. Here’s how:
What I used to do (did NOT work):
- Say “stop crying!” = cries louder
- Offer candy = next time wants candy again
- Get angry = both crying
- Leave cart full = wasted trip
What works now – 2 minute method:
Minute 1: Get low + whisper
I kneel to his eye level. I whisper, not shout. “I see you are mad. You want that truck.” Whisper makes him stop to listen. 90% tantrums stop here.
Minute 2: Choice, not question
Don’t say “Do you want to go?” (he says NO!)
Say “Do you want to hold list or push cart?” Give 2 choices you are OK with. He feels control.
Last Target trip: He wanted $20 truck. I said “Not today. You can hold my phone and take pictures or hold the shopping list.” He chose list. Tantrum done. No candy needed!
My Target emergency kit (USA mom must):
- Small snack in purse (Goldfish $0.50)
- One small toy from Dollar Tree (keep only for Target)
- Water – half tantrums are thirsty toddler!
What if nothing works?
I leave. I say “We try again tomorrow.” I abandoned cart 2 times in 1 year. It’s OK. No one at Target judges – they all been there!
USA moms: Target tantrums are normal. Your toddler not bad. He is tired/hungry/overstimulated by lights.
