Every mom needs a daycare backup plan before winter. January to March is peak sick season. My daycare closed 3 times in February 2025 alone for flu and hand-foot-mouth. No credit, no backup.
If you don’t have a daycare backup plan, you will pay $20-$25/hour for last-minute sitter = $200/day. I paid that twice. Never again.

Daycare Backup Plan Option 1: Grandparent Split Shift
My daycare backup plan #1 is grandparents split shift. My mom takes 7AM-12PM, my mother-in-law takes 12PM-5PM. One grandparent full day is too much, split is easy.
How I set up daycare backup plan with grandparents: I created shared calendar “Backup Care” and put all daycare closure dates. I text group chat at 6AM: “Daycare closed, need backup today – who can take morning?” First to reply gets $20 DoorDash gift card, not cash.

Daycare Backup Plan Option 2: Work Swap with Mom Friend
My best daycare backup plan is work swap with my neighbor. She has 2 kids at same daycare. When daycare closes, we swap: I watch 3 kids Monday, she watches 3 kids Tuesday. Free daycare backup plan and kids play.
We made daycare backup plan agreement: Each mom gets 5 backup days per year, max 3 kids, bring own lunch, no sick kid swap if fever over 101. We track in Notes app.

How to use employer daycare backup plan: My HR benefit is called “Backup Family Care.” I get 10 days at $0, they pay sitter $25/hour. I used 3 days when daughter had ear infection and couldn’t go to daycare.
Ask HR: “Do we have backup daycare benefit, Bright Horizons backup, or Care.com credits?” 40% of large employers have daycare backup plan benefit and moms don’t know.
Daycare Backup Plan Option 4: Husband Shift Work
My daycare backup plan with husband: He works 6AM-2PM, I work 10AM-6PM on backup days. Overlap 10AM-2PM we both work with kid in pack-n-play. Not perfect but free.
We set daycare backup plan calendar: Every Sunday, check daycare app for illness alerts. If 5+ kids out with flu, we assume closure tomorrow and plan shifts night before. No morning panic.
Daycare backup plan communication: We have rule – who has important meeting keeps work, other takes sick kid. Written in shared note.
Daycare Backup Plan Option 5: Local Church Drop-In
Last resort daycare backup plan: Local church drop-in. My church has $0 “Mothers Morning Out” 9AM-12PM twice a week – even if you aren’t member! Also YMCA has $15 half-day drop-in when daycare closes.

- Church 1: Free 9-12 Tue/Thu, no membership needed
- Library: Free story time 10-11:30 with crafts – not childcare but 90 min to work in lobby
- YMCA: $15 for 3 hours drop-in backup
Call 3 churches near you and ask: “Do you have free mothers morning out or drop-in care when daycare closes?” Most do.
